MICHIGAN CITY — The first baby of the year has an independent mom.

“I drove myself to the hospital,” said Kaycie Konchar, the new mother of new baby girl Khalyah Konchar, Michigan City’s first baby of 2012.

“She was visiting a friend who lives just a few blocks away,” said Kaycie’s mom, Cindy Konchar, a dietary clerk at Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Michigan City, where the baby was born at 3:50 a.m. on Monday, January 2, 2012.

Labor began at 5:30 a.m. Jan. 1, but did not progress as everyone had hoped. In the early morning hours of Monday, Jan. 2 then, Dr. Michael Messina, the obstetrician on call, delivered Khalyah by C-section. She weighed a healthy 8 pounds, 4 ounces.

Kaycie, 19, said she was in “quite a bit of pain” late Monday morning, but she was happy to meet her baby daughter.

Various gifts for the baby were displayed on shelves in Kaycie’s spacious room in the Franciscan St. Anthony obstetrics department known as “The BirthDay Place.”

An employee of the Dairy Queen in Chesterton, Kaycie will live with her parents, her sisters and brother at the family’s Chesterton home.

Asked whether she had any worries about taking baby Khalyah home, Kaycie said, “none,” and smiled as the baby snuggled into her shoulder. Her mother, Cindy, who will be called “Nana” by the baby, already is helping the new mother to feel comfortable in her new role,” Kaycie said.
