Council to consider more money for city engineer

MICHIGAN CITY — New City Engineer Charles Peller could receive an increase in pay if the Michigan City Common Council votes to approve an ordinance that would send an additional $12,165 to cover his salary and benefits.
Mayor Ron Meer said that the extra money given to the engineer will not come out of the city's budget because the facilities manager position, which paid $55,000 a year, was eliminated on Feb. 28.
Of that amount, a little more than $12,000 is set to go to the city engineer, with other portions slated to either pay for a part-time City Hall custodian or roll back into the general fund, Meer said.
"We are still going to save $20,000, have a quality city engineer and add a part-time custodian," he said.
Before Peller was hired, Meer said there could be a need for an additional appropriation for the new engineer because the city previously allotted less than $50,000 a year for the position when it was occupied by Bill Phelps, who announced his retirement in December.
