MICHIGAN CITY — The Michigan City Police Civil Service Commission Wednesday honored 12 officers for their service.

Ten officers received Exceptional Service Awards for exemplary work when serving a warrant to David Oldham during a four-hour stand-off on Jan. 17 with officers from the Michigan City Police Department, the U.S. Marshal and the Lake County and La Porte counties sheriff’s offices.

Officers honored were Sgt. David Legros, La Porte County Deputy Sheriff Andy Hynek, Detective Francisco Rodriguez, Detective Andrew Paull, Lake County Sheriff Deputy Tony Rendina, Deputy U.S. Marshal Tim Craigin, Cpl. Ken Drake, Detective Allen Schutz, Cpl. Jason Holaway and Assistant Chief Tim Richardson.

“It is very clear that if it were not for all of the above officers who showed such great restraint, levels of expertise and determination to bring this incident to an end, that something tragic would have occurred that afternoon,” said Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek.

“I just can’t say enough about these guys,” said Legros, speaking for the officers who were honored, saying they secured the scene, and observed caution during a dangerous situation.

Officials also honored Second Patrol Shift officers Jason Cracknell and Capt. John Kintzele with Life Saving Awards. On the afternoon of Feb. 26, a victim came into the police station lobby, said he was shot and fell to the floor. Cracknell immediately got on the radio and advised emergency dispatch to get an ambulance for a shooting victim. Kintzele assessed the situation and without hesitation applied direct pressure to the wounds. Both continued to administer first aid until help arrived and remained calm.
