La PORTE — The "Motor City Madman" will be making his way through La Porte County this July when he comes to the 2012 La Porte County Fair.

Detroit-raised rocker Ted Nugent, known for the multi-platinum songs "Journey to the Center of the Mind," "Stranglehold" and "Cat Scratch Fever" will be stopping by on July 14 as part of his "White Buffalo Tour," bookending a week of music, games and activities for the county.

"We got a pretty good deal," said fair manager Gene Shurte. "We're lucky we caught him."

The grandstand events on fair week will start with the International Demolition Derby on Sunday, July 8, and Monday, July 9, at 7 p.m. The International Figure 8 Demolition Derby will be the same time on Tuesday. Each event is $15 for box seats and $12 for grandstand seats.

On Wednesday, July 11, at 7 p.m., the WIMS Radio-sponsored Battle of the Bands competition will be held. This event is free.

On Thursday, July 12, at 7 p.m., a Christian rock night will be held, starting with opening act Samestreet followed by headliner Building 429. Track and box seats for the show are $12 each and grandstand seats are $10 each. Building 429 is known for such songs as "Listen to the Sound," "Glory Defined," "War Zone," "Where I Belong" and "You Save Me"

Then on Friday, July 13, at 7 p.m., the fair will host its country night beginning with opening act Colt Ford followed by headliner Eli Young Band. Premium track seats are $40 each, track and box seats are $30, grandstand seats are $25 and wing seats are $15. Eli Young Band's single "Crazy Girl" just received the 47th annual Academy of Country Music Award's Song of the Year award.

And on Saturday, July 14, at 8 p.m., Ted Nugent will be stopping by on his "Great White Buffalo Tour" to perform. Premium track seats are $40, track and box seats are $30, grandstand seats are $20 and wings seats are $15.

Shurte said fair organizers are hoping Nugent can bring in 6,000 people to the main show this year. Last year the lead act attracted about 5,000.

He said he was happy to get the musician, but pointed out that big names have their prices.

"There's a lot of costs of putting a name of that stature on that stage," he said. "They have a lot of amenities we have to support and production costs, and the bigger the name the more production costs there are."

But he pointed out that there's plenty for everyone to enjoy this year, with rock, country and Christian music.

"We have three different genres of music," Shurte said, "a little something for everybody, and a battle of the bands on Wednesday night with the local La Porte people."

He said the fair hasn't hosted a battle of the bands in years, but its organizers are excited to have one again.

All entertainment and fair admission tickets will go on sale April 28 at 8 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at the fair office, over the phone at (219) 362-2647, or through our website at laportecountyfair.org (payment through PayPal).
