UNION MILLS | A volleyball coach at South Central Junior/Senior High School is accused of taking hundreds of dollars in concession money.

Jennifer Haschel, 38, of Union Mills was arraigned Wednesday in LaPorte Circuit Court on a Class D felony charge of theft.

According to court documents, Haschel was a volleyball coach for seventh-graders at South Central Junior/Senior High School at the time of the alleged thefts. Her husband, Chad Haschel, is the athletic director at the school.

Court documents state Haschel told investigators she used a key her husband had for the concession stands and made a copy for herself to steal the money.

According to court documents, volunteers in the concession stands also reported seeing Jennifer Haschel on numerous occasions going through the cash box during events.

The investigation by Indiana State Police alleges thefts from concession stands totaling $500 to $700 occurred on six separate occasions in 2011 and 2012.

But Jennifer Haschel is specifically charged with taking $137 on April 13 and $66.50 on April 14.

Home baseball and softball games were held on those days and a video recording shows Haschel during that period driving up to the concession stand area in her Jeep Cherokee and leaving eight minutes later, according to court documents.

Court documents show Indiana State Police were given the surveillance video on DVD to review at the request of school officials after they discovered the missing funds during an inventory of the concession receipts.

According to court documents, volunteers in the concession stand told investigators they were suspicious of Haschel but didn't come forward right away thinking she was collecting the money at the request of her husband to have it deposited into the school account.

Police said Jennifer Haschel admitted to stealing money to help fuel addictions to alcohol and gambling, court records disclosed.

In response, a letter submitted to the court from Superintendent Chris Smith reveals Jennifer Haschel is no longer allowed to participate in any school events including coaching volleyball and concessions.

She was arrested June 12 after prosecutors determined there was enough evidence to bring about charges.
