MICHIGAN CITY | It was business as usual for the Michigan City Wolves as they dispatched of the Hoffman Estate Hawks, 25-7, for the Division II Pee Wee title of the Mid-America Pop Warner Regional Championships on Friday at Ames Field.
There is still more work to be done, though the next stop for the Wolves may seem like an ideal winter vacation.
"It's a business trip and that's how we're going treat it," said Wolves head coach Leo Martorano, whose undefeated team (14-0) advances to the Pop Warner National Championships, Dec. 7-14 at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
This is the fifth straight PW National Championships (also referred to as the Pop Warner Super Bowl) that Michigan City has sent at least one team to. Last year, the Wolves Junior Pee Wee team made it as far as the championship game before losing to Tacolcy, Fla., 30-13.
"We have 14 players from that team," Martorano said. "They know what it takes, and they want to take the next step."
Lyric McFarrin had touchdown runs of 42, 52 and 48 yards; and quarterback Bryce Hayman hooked up with Zennon Wilhelm on a 45-yard TD pass for the Wolves, who scored 25 unanswered points after the Hawks opened the scoring in the first quarter.
"We had to make some adjustments defensively," Martorano said. "We already knew we were going up against a tough team."
Now for the hard part: raising enough money for the trip south.
"We need all the donations we can get," said Martorano, whose team is scheduled to play its first game at 1 p.m. Saturday. "We're still short a lot (of money) and we don't have much time."
