MICHIGAN CITY – A manufacturing firm with deep roots in Michigan City is bringing jobs from China as part of its latest expansion.

The city council awarded Michigan City Paper Box Co. a five-year tax abatement Tuesday night on $1.2 million in new equipment.

"I love hearing that,’" said councilman Don Pryzbylinski about work overseas coming back to the United States.

At least 12 new jobs could be added to the existing workforce of 87.

The investment will allow the third generation family-owned company to launch a new e-commerce site for customers to customize and design their own boxes and place orders directly online.

Anthony Novak, a LaPorte attorney for Michigan City Paper Box Co. which was established in 1904, said larger boxes now made exclusively in China will also start being produced locally by adding the advanced pieces of machinery.

"They’re going to move all of that production from China and bring it right here to the confines of Michigan City,’’ Novak said.
