How are the two quotes from the same article that far off? That is really bad information. I know a member of one of the developers who are in contention for the contract and the former police station site is not going to be a "strip mall." They didn't tear those buildings down and send out proposals for development to nationwide development firms to put up a strip mall.

Most plans I've been aware of include a 4 story covered parking podium with ground floor retail and a 10+ story hotel atop the base. They want a mixed-use project that provides "lake views." There may be some deviation from other developers but I wouldn't expect that even Michigan City officials would ruin the plans that badly. The mayor and redevelopment commission have also repeatedly stated that they want a north end hotel with lake views of the mid-to high-rise variety.

The proposals have been hush-hush and the renderings from the different developers should have been made public with the city residents allowed to have a say before picking a final design since this is a public-private venture that includes tax dollars.

Anything less than 12-15 stories minimum here is a joke for the city and would be completely underutilizing the property and another giant wasted opportunity. The programming should include levels of hotel/rental/condominium to make it viable and profitable. Materials should be modern with a steel frame and glass curtain wall with facade design elements that are architecturally significant.

Something along the lines of this building should be the city's goal:
