MICHIGAN CITY — Police say the woman struck and killed by a semitruck Tuesday outside a local hotel had placed herself underneath the vehicle.

"Based on evidence and information obtained on scene it appears that the victim crawled underneath the truck after the driver had already conducted her pre-trip inspection of the vehicle," Michigan City police Sgt. Chris Yagelski said in a written statement.

"As the driver pulled forward to exit the parking lot, the victim was immediately run over by the rear wheels of the vehicle," he said.

The woman had been identified earlier in the day as 61-year-old Pamela Kay Nadel, who police said was living in a local hotel. Police said she was from LaPorte and has family in the area.

Nadel was struck in the parking lot of King's Inn, 200 Kieffer Road. Police said they discovered her body at 9:49 a.m. lying in the gravel portion of the lot adjacent to the office.

A photograph from a nearby surveillance camera was released to the public and within hours the vehicle and its driver were located, police said. The driver, who will not be charged, is a 23-year-old Florida woman.
