145 guns from La Porte County residents are now in the hands of Michigan City police.

The department says it's gun take-back drive happening over the past two days was a success.

All of those guns will be destroyed.

Officials say this "Silence the Violence" campaign is making a difference, because taking weapons -- unwanted and not properly stored -- prevents criminals from getting their hands on them.

The guns are checked before being melted down to make sure no one is trying to get rid of evidence.
