Michigan City's rates have gone from 3.8% in September, to 4.3% in October, 4.5 in November, and 4.7 in December. 500 more people are out of work according to the BLS stats.

Our Metro areas is 2nd worst in the state, 2nd only to Gary.

This is what needs attention in Michigan City. Strange that LaPorte seems to land firms with good paying jobs, but MC just can't get anyone like that.

Good timing. The February numbers just came out. After going to 5.6 % in January, we went to 5.9% in February. That is now an increase of almost 60% or another 1000+ people out of work locally.

All happening when the rest of the country is at a 50 year historic low unemployment. We need some fresh ideas from somewhere, their Play Stay Repeat consultant angle is not working. We need industry, we need to build something or make something or be a transportation hub. We couldn’t even keep a wiper blade manufacturer here. Some bold fresh ideas would sure help. What about luring a large indoor/outdoor water park like. The Wilderness to Michigan City, let them build north of Fedders Alley, to incorporate the Beach into the business. It would be extremely unique and a big draw. Plus, if we actually finally did reverse the stupid 1970’s decision to put a bushel basket, the library, right over our best asset, the Lake and move that building, we would be laying out the welcome mat to our jewel. A large hotel and water park, I think we could give up 100’ of beachfront for 500 or so jobs. Still not the high paying jobs we need, but it is a start. People could come one weekend to the water park and another weekend to the casino or shopping, especially if we get a faster train service to Chicago. Once the Nipsco plant shuts down there goes 500 more jobs. We need our people working again.
