Mainstreet Vying For State Recognition

From Staff Reports

MICHIGAN CITY - Michigan City Mainstreet Association on Wednesday hosted Jo Grandel, program director for Indiana Main Street, and Geoff Schomacker, project manager for the Indiana Office of Community & Rural Affairs.

Schomacker and Grandel, along with Mayor Chuck Oberlie, attended the city's Mainstreet Association board meeting and met with board members and staff of the Preservation and Education Foundation and the Michigan City Economic Development Corp. They also visited the Entrepreneur Center and the LaPorte County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

"The site visit," said Roger Potratz, president of the city's Mainstreet Association and owner of dh2w architectural firm, "is part of the application process to become an active member of the Indiana Mainstreet Association."

During the visit, Grandel presented Potratz with the city's membership certificate.

"Once we send our end-of-year reports to Jo Grandel, we'll be well on our way to becoming a State Designated Mainstreet Organization," said Tim Haas, vice president of the Michigan City Mainstreet Association and owner of Haas & Associates engineering.

As an active member, Michigan City is eligible to apply for grants that fund facade programs, USDA Economic Development grants for business and cooperative programs, community development block grants and other funds.

Grandel plans to return to Michigan City on Aug. 17 to present a two-hour training program to Mainstreet board members.
