Welborne Receives Alinsky Award
MICHIGAN CITY - The Michigan City Area Chamber of Commerce and the Michigan City Rotary Club on Monday presented the 2007 Paul J. Alinsky Excellence Award to James Welborne.

The announcement was made at the Chamber's fourth quarter membership meeting at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts.

The award is given annually to a person in the community who exhibits excellence in technology and community service. Welborne, owner of Welborne Associates, was nominated by Beverly Welborne. The award was presented by Chamber President Tim Bietry and Rotary Club President Pat Boy, who said in introducing Welborne, "He truly represents the spirit of the Alinsky Award. He also fully demonstrates one of the most important tenets of Rotary: Service Above Self."

Welborne's consulting company has implemented small- to medium-business solutions in business systems, applications and security, the Chamber and Rotary said in announcing the award.

"His outstanding contribution to technology includes serving on the ANSI X3.J4 standards committee, which defined the standards for COBOL programming language, the most commonly used programming language in the business world, serving on a standards committee that led to the encryption algorithms being used today to secure the Internet, and developing a medical transcription software package," the announcement said.

His community service includes involvement in the Association of Systems Management, Boy Scouts of America, St. Peter's Parish and Michigan City Rotary Club.

The award was established in honor of Paul Alinsky who was a past Chamber chairman of the board, Rotary Club president and founder of Sentinel Alarm Co. Alinsky died in 1997 and the award was created by the Rotary Club to keep his memory alive.

Past recipients of the Alinsky Award are Ron Bensz, Jerry Karstens, Duane Mertl, Les Radke, Burton "Bud" Ruby, Emerson Spartz and Glenn Lubeznik.
