Wow, with the late fall this year, its almost too early to start. None of the leaves have fallen off of my trees, in fact it seems that most trees haven't even changed colors yet.

City To Start Leaf Pickup
MICHIGAN CITY - The Michigan City Street Department will begin fall leaf pickup Monday, Oct. 22.

Residents who want weekly leaf pickups may use compost containers or compost/yard waste bags (no plastic bags).

Bags will be picked up by the Refuse Department with regular compost until Friday, Nov. 16. Leaves will be picked up by request only prior to Monday. Anyone who needs branches picked up should call 873-1500.

Mayor Chuck Oberlie has asked that residents cooperate by following three rules: no plastic bags; branches, rocks and other debris must be kept out of leaf piles; and leaf piles should be loose in large piles in front of the property and as close to the curb as possible, but away from sewer drains. Leaves will not be picked up in alleys.

Leaf pickup schedule will be in the following zones:

• Area 1: Oct. 22 to 26 and Nov. 12 to 16. County Line Road on the west, Franklin Street on the east, Kieffer road on the south and Lake Michigan on the north.

• Area 2: Oct. 29 to Nov. 2 and Nov. 19 to 23. Lake Shore Drive, U.S. 12 and Shoreland Drive on the north, Michigan Boulevard on the south and Meer Road on the east.

• Area 3: Nov. 5 to 9 and Nov. 26 to 30. Franklin Street on the west, Michigan Boulevard and Roeske Avenue on the east and Kieffer Road on the south.
