City may acquire two more Michigan Boulevard buildings

The Redevelopment Commission is hoping to put two more Michigan Boulevard properties under its belt.

The commission on Monday passed a resolution enabling them to negotiate further with the property owners of 503 and 531 Michigan Blvd.

Commission attorney Michael Bergerson said 503 Michigan Blvd. is a residential structure currently occupied by tenants, but is listed for sale.

“I had some preliminary discussions with the Realtor related to that property,” Bergerson said. “It's in our area of interest. We did not prompt it to be on the market.”

City Planner John Pugh said 503 Michigan Blvd. is in the area where the commission has previously acquired properties along Cedar Street.

“This particular property is occupied, however it is one we'd like to have removed,” Pugh said. “It is in somewhat of a rundown condition. The premises are unkempt.”

The commission will also obtain appraisals on 503 Michigan Blvd. which is currently listed at $68,000 with Merrion & Associates.

“It's listed at substantially more than what we've acquired other properties in this neighborhood at,” Bergerson said.

Bergerson said the city is currently in negotiations with the Michigan Township Trustee's office, which owns 531 Michigan Blvd.

“We've had some appraisals done already. They've had some appraisals done,” Bergerson said. “They have found potentially a property they are interested in moving (to) subject to getting some additional information ...”

The Michigan Township trustee's office approached the commission in May 2006 about purchasing their building.

Bergerson said the area which the two properties are located has previously been found to be blighted.

“The area continues to be blighted to the extent that it cannot be corrected by the regulatory process,” Bergerson said.

Also on Monday, Pugh told the commission that demolition has started on the Verma Property at 742 E. Eighth St. The demolition contract was awarded to Residential Construction & Excavating for $47,840.
