MICHIGAN CITY - Building at Suburban Estates is nearing an end.

The Michigan City Plan Commission on Tuesday night approved Suburban Home Builders' request for a minor subdivision on Ohio Street at Riviera Drive. Seven members of the commission voted in favor of the subdivision. Two members, George Mock and Pat Boy, were absent.

Developers Dick LaFrentz and Marty Kolasa told the commission that the project will be the final phase of the development of Suburban Estates.

"This is the fourth time and hopefully the last. We're just about wrapping up our subdivision," LaFrentz said. "With a little bit of luck, maybe we'll make it. We expected to be done by this time. I want to stop. We've been at this plenty long."

LaFrentz said 1.8 acres on Ohio Street will be developed to match the rest of Suburban Estates.

"We're going to build it out and put six units and that's it," LaFrentz said. "All the buildings in the subdivision will be the same. Once it's done, that's it."

In June 2005, the city's plan commission approved the final phase of the development, which included 12 lots that will connect to Ohio Street to make Suburban Estates a horseshoe-shaped development. That addition was later replatted, changing the 12 planned lots to 15.

Also Tuesday night, commissioners moved discussion of two issues, the tower ordinance and amending the zoning code regarding setback requirements, to January due to absence of the commission's legal counsel.
