When I was a kid, we would go to Chicago to visit relatives, and there was an old joke that to get to Chicago, you follow the "Anti-kews," which, of course, were the signs.

I was a dishwasher at Howard's Restaurant when I was 14. I hated it and quit after two days. Looking back, I really wish that I had stuck it out longer just for the character-building aspects. But, just a 14-year-old punk who wanted nothing to do with washing dishes.

McDonald's used to own a couple little snack bars down in Washington park called Snorkles. I got in on that. Serving hot dogs, nachos, cotton candy and drinks. Among other things. Wow, that was about 15 years ago.

My first job was at Harvey's Dime Store on Michigan Blvd. I then upgraded and worked next door at Hook's Pharmacy right next to K&M.
Harvey's had Ace Hardware inside. We sold animals, clothing, and misc. things. It was cool. Most of the employees were Elston High School students. Cool job. |

I vaguely remember the laser shows on the cooling tower...it is one of those things I thought I remembered from when I was really little! My first summer job was lifegaurding at Pottawattomie Country Club... did that for 4 summers. |

Aside from delivering the News-Dispatch at age 11, I did a short stint with Schneiders Key Shop when I was 13 and a couple years later went to work for Ponchos Tacos on Franklin St. Don't remember the pay, but I "upgraded" from that job to take one at St. Anthony's paying $1.96 an hour.

Wow - I can't believe someone dug this thread up! I worked for the Port Authority for a couple of years. Worked the gas dock in the yacht basin. Had to rake alewives off the boat ramps and haul them to the dump. A trash can full of dead fish in the hot sun for a half hour ride to the dump? Not a pleasant memory.

I delivered tickets, stamped brochures, and shagged lunch for the ladies at First Travel when I was 17.

My first (and only) job in MC was in the early 80s at Valueland on Franklin St. I was a stocker there.
Looking back on it, that was one of the best jobs I've had. I don't know if it was a good job or if it was because it was the first time I ever made money. It was an interesting job, and the people actually cared about you. Every other job I've ever had (except for 2 others), you can quit and they could care less. In fact, even when your there and working they could care less about you. |

Family bidness at age nine cleaning machinery on the weekends and after hours. In Indiana you can work for a family business at ANY age or at least that used to be the law. First summer job outside the plant: "LASERS ON THE DUNES!" My dad was a principal in the Lasers On The Dunes. I was just a kid but remember driving the golf carts around. There are also some "interesting" things lasered on the water tower..... SHHHHHHH Welcome to the Michigan City Area Schools, we are over budget, over paid, overwhelmed ... |

I'm sorry - I read that as "I shagged ladies for lunch at First Travel." In my best Austin Powers typing..."Ohh behave..." "If a man opens the car door for his wife, it's either a new car or a new wife." - Duke of Edinburgh.

I worked at Walters Hospital as a nurses aide (after a brief stint at Morrison's Drive-In). I loved that job! I started working their at 15. Like other people stated on this thread, they really cared about you; and i cared about the job.

My first non paper route job in MC was at Burger King in probably 1984. You could start working at 15 but they only paid $2.85. When you turned 16 they had to pay you $3.35 but they could work you longer and more often. Nothing smells quite as disgusting as a polyester Burger King uniform after an 8 hour Saturday shift. But I did learn the wonderful taste of onion rings dipped in mayonnaise there!!

My first job, at age 17, was at Dan's Body Shop as a parts chaser, janitor, car washer and anything else which needed to be done. Most of the people working there at that time are long gone I would imagine. I learned a little bit about business and a bunch about people.

I worked at Quality Bakery in high school. The owners and some other employees spoke German most of the time and I always felt they were talking about me!
They made great bread and the best brownies. I really miss a good bakery. Nothing is worth more than this day!

First regular non-summer-only job--washing dishes and prep cook at The Pub-age 12.
Otherwise, scraping and painting boat hulls at South Lake Marine...I still cough up the blue dust every once in a while. Oh, yeah, I was a boat boy for a charter fisherman, as well. Le Grande Dame was the boat...nasty gig...fish guts and drunk tourist puke. Buy Local!
