Where id you first work in MC?

My first job was at the Pirate Ship when I was 14. This was a pizza restaurant that was near the Holiday Inn - part of the front of it was shaped like the back end of a pirate ship. I was good at washing dishes - not so good at making pizzas. This was, however where I learned that when washing windows your best bet for n streaks is to dry with newspaper - so one good thing came out of it. biggrin.gif

What about you?
Southsider2k12
I worked in the Pottawattomie Park Pro Shop for Jack Seyring. I loved that job.

Not counting paper routes that I started at about 11 years old, my first job was for Schneiders Key shop at age 13 down on I believe 5th street.

Family bidness at age nine cleaning machinery on the weekends and after hours. In Indiana you can work for a family business at ANY age or at least that used to be the law. First summer job outside the plant:

Not counting the many babysitting jobs that I had starting at age 13, I worked at National Record Mart at Marquette Mall (starting at 16). What a cool first job for a teenager...
Ang
I had two first jobs:

I worked at Memorial Hospital as the switchboard operator. A week later I got hired at Chess King. My shift at the hosptial was same all the time and I only worked two 8 hour shifts a week, so I had plenty of time to spend at the mall.

I was 15.

They did a laser light show out on the NIPSCO tower for a while IIRC.

First Michigan City job was at Gateway Industries, on the assembly line, making seat belts. It inspired me to go back to college!

My first job was at Harvey's Dine Store and then next door to that at Hook's Drug Store on Michigan Blvd.
Ang
When I was a little girl, grandma used to give me two nickels and take me to Harvey's Five & Dime. Oh Man! That was such an awsome treat!

In the 80's. The entry was over by the tracks in the S turns by Mount Baldy. Bricker was the one who started it up. He had a bunch of highschool kids running the place. You'd park your car right there in the lot and then hike through the dunes. They had a booth west of the tower where the lasers were and they'd project cartoon like laser images on the west face of the tower that went along to corny music. Myself along with a bunch of my friends worked there. I eventually quit because I realized it made more sense to work days in the shop rather than at night. A lot of my friends got screwed over by the owner because he never paid them for the last month of thier work.

I like this idea -- use the cooling tower to show movies or cartoons, broadcast the sound by radio like they do on the highway for traffic info ("tune in to 530 am for traffic updates"). Seems to me the cost could be pretty low (heck, use old cartoons now out of copyright, or even do silent movies and skip the radio part).

I guess porno wouldn't work.

Cleaning the shelves at Al's on Mich Blvd. Take stuff off, clean, put it back. The whole store. At nights, when the stockers were there. Good, clean fun.
Marram
Patching the big flat roof of Fiberbond during summers between school years.

Then when I graduated from ND, and while I waited ten months until I shipped out for the Peace Corps, there were a plethora of jobs: night shift as a psychiatric tech at Kingwood, weekends as a server at the Holiday Inn banquet hall, substitute teacher, staff writer for the News-Dispatch, and assistant Coach for the Barker Jr High wrestling team. Not much sleep during that time period.

I worked two jobs during the summer I turned 16. One was at Performance Engineered Products in the Pines where I pulled orders in a warehouse. I also was a store clerk at Vernier China.

I always wanted to go to that china place! Was it really cool inside?

Yes and no. The clock room and the china were beautiful. The store also had a wholesale business on the side, however, and sold a lot of junk as well. They had a lot of bargain figurines and such.

When I was a kid, we would go to Chicago to visit relatives, and there was an old joke that to get to Chicago, you follow the "Anti-kews," which, of course, were the signs.
MC Born & Raised
I was a dishwasher at Howard's Restaurant when I was 14. I hated it and quit after two days. Looking back, I really wish that I had stuck it out longer just for the character-building aspects. But, just a 14-year-old punk who wanted nothing to do with washing dishes.
RexKickass
I wrote for the News-Dispatch as a box-score/recap writer in the Sports department in 1993-1994.

McDonald's used to own a couple little snack bars down in Washington park called Snorkles. I got in on that. Serving hot dogs, nachos, cotton candy and drinks. Among other things. Wow, that was about 15 years ago.
Mack
I washed dishes and made pizza and blue cheese dressing at Bennie's Restaurant in 1980. Virginia , Jack and alot of other great people there back in the day.
RedDevilMC
My first job was at Harvey's Dime Store on Michigan Blvd. I then upgraded and worked next door at Hook's Pharmacy right next to K&M.

Harvey's had Ace Hardware inside. We sold animals, clothing, and misc. things. It was cool. Most of the employees were Elston High School students. Cool job.
citycheercoach

I vaguely remember the laser shows on the cooling tower...it is one of those things I thought I remembered from when I was really little!

My first summer job was lifegaurding at Pottawattomie Country Club... did that for 4 summers.
taxthedeer
In January of 1990, Building windshield wiper blades at $5.00 an hour at ANCO's former offsite assembly facility at 5th and Huron on the westside.

Aside from delivering the News-Dispatch at age 11, I did a short stint with Schneiders Key Shop when I was 13 and a couple years later went to work for Ponchos Tacos on Franklin St. Don't remember the pay, but I "upgraded" from that job to take one at St. Anthony's paying $1.96 an hour.
Tim
Wow - I can't believe someone dug this thread up! I worked for the Port Authority for a couple of years. Worked the gas dock in the yacht basin. Had to rake alewives off the boat ramps and haul them to the dump. A trash can full of dead fish in the hot sun for a half hour ride to the dump? Not a pleasant memory.
CaddyRich
I delivered tickets, stamped brochures, and shagged lunch for the ladies at First Travel when I was 17.
TSNSPYDER
My first (and only) job in MC was in the early 80s at Valueland on Franklin St. I was a stocker there.

Looking back on it, that was one of the best jobs I've had. I don't know if it was a good job or if it was because it was the first time I ever made money. It was an interesting job, and the people actually cared about you. Every other job I've ever had (except for 2 others), you can quit and they could care less. In fact, even when your there and working they could care less about you.

My dad was a principal in the Lasers On The Dunes. I was just a kid but remember driving the golf carts around. There are also some "interesting" things lasered on the water tower..... SHHHHHHH

I worked at Walters Hospital as a nurses aide (after a brief stint at Morrison's Drive-In). I loved that job! I started working their at 15. Like other people stated on this thread, they really cared about you; and i cared about the job.

My first non paper route job in MC was at Burger King in probably 1984. You could start working at 15 but they only paid $2.85. When you turned 16 they had to pay you $3.35 but they could work you longer and more often. Nothing smells quite as disgusting as a polyester Burger King uniform after an 8 hour Saturday shift. But I did learn the wonderful taste of onion rings dipped in mayonnaise there!!
MCRogers1974
My first job, at age 17, was at Dan's Body Shop as a parts chaser, janitor, car washer and anything else which needed to be done. Most of the people working there at that time are long gone I would imagine. I learned a little bit about business and a bunch about people.
Homey
I worked at Quality Bakery in high school. The owners and some other employees spoke German most of the time and I always felt they were talking about me! smile.gif
They made great bread and the best brownies. I really miss a good bakery.

First regular non-summer-only job--washing dishes and prep cook at The Pub-age 12.

Otherwise, scraping and painting boat hulls at South Lake Marine...I still cough up the blue dust every once in a while.

Oh, yeah, I was a boat boy for a charter fisherman, as well. Le Grande Dame was the boat...nasty gig...fish guts and drunk tourist puke.

A boat boy for a charter fisherman? Don't you mean an apprentice baiter?

Not exactly MC...but it was close enough: The Whirlpool distribution center on 1900 Whirlpool Drive. I mean really....it was a GREAT place to work.
